Veteran Homelessness in Dallas-Fort Worth: The Numbers and What's Being Done

Veterans make up a small share of DFW's population but a disproportionate share of its homeless count. Here's why, and what's actually working.

Texas has one of the largest veteran populations in the country, and Dallas-Fort Worth is home to a sizable share of it. Veterans also show up in HUD's annual Point-in-Time homeless counts at a rate higher than their share of the general adult population - a gap that hasn't closed as fast as the national veteran homelessness numbers overall have improved.

The Numbers

  • Nationally, veteran homelessness has fallen more than 50% since 2010 (HUD, 2024 count), with the VA's HUD-VASH voucher program a major driver
  • Texas still counts among the states with the highest total number of homeless veterans, in part due to its large overall veteran population
  • Veterans experiencing homelessness are more likely to report a service-connected disability, PTSD, or substance use as a contributing factor than the general homeless population

Why Veterans Are Overrepresented

  • Combat-related trauma - untreated PTSD and traumatic brain injury make holding steady employment and housing harder
  • Difficult transitions - the jump from structured military life to civilian housing and job markets is abrupt for many
  • Substance use as self-medication - veterans coping with chronic pain or trauma sometimes develop dependence on alcohol or opioids, which compounds housing instability
  • Family and social disconnection - deployments and moves can fray the informal safety net most people rely on before they'd ever end up on the street

What's Actually Working

The HUD-VASH program - a rental voucher paired with VA case management - has been the single biggest driver of the national decline in veteran homelessness. It works because it pairs housing with ongoing support, rather than treating housing and treatment as separate problems to solve one after another.

In DFW, the VA North Texas Health Care System and local homeless-service providers run coordinated intake so a veteran doesn't have to navigate multiple separate systems alone. The single most effective first step for a veteran or a veteran's family is calling the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans, which can connect directly to VA housing, healthcare, and benefits support.
