If you've never called one

What happens when you call a crisis line.

1

A trained person answers.

You'll reach a crisis counselor - not a recording and not the police. You don't need insurance, a diagnosis, or the "right" words. "I'm not okay" is enough to start.

2

They listen and help you get safe.

The counselor will ask what's going on and whether you're safe right now. Together you'll work out what would help get you through the next few hours.

3

They connect you to what's next.

That might be a follow-up call, a local clinic, or - through your county's line - crisis stabilization or a mobile crisis team that can meet you in person. Most calls are handled entirely over the phone.

4

You can call for someone else.

Worried about a friend or family member? Every line on this page takes calls from people who want to help someone they love. A safety plan is a good next step once the moment has passed.

Numbers on this page were checked against each organization's official website in September 2026. If a number doesn't work, call 988 or 911 and let us know.
